Summer Reading Program 2010

The 2010 Summer Reading Program starts June 7th and ends at 6:00pm on Friday, July 30th. Teens who have completed 5th grade through 12th grade may sign up in person at any branch starting June 7th!

Read anything of your choice - a magazine, comic book, a page on the Internet, or a good old-fashioned book, or listen to an audiobook. Track the amount of time you spend reading and win prizes!

Wii Tournament

The next Wii Tournament happens Saturday, July 17th, 2010 in Meeting Rooms ABC at the Main Library in downtown Fort Wayne.

This competition is for ages 12-19 only!

Play Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii. Best Buy gift cards will be awarded to the top three winners: 1st place = $100, 2nd place = $50, 3rd place = $30.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16.


In the United States Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. The date is perhaps best recognized in the United States as a date to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican ancestry, much as St. Patrick's Day, Oktoberfest, and the Chinese New Year are used to celebrate those of Irish, German, and Chinese ancestry respectively. Similar to those holidays, Cinco de Mayo is observed by many Americans regardless of ethnic origin. Special events and celebrations highlight Mexican culture, especially in its music and regional dancing. Examples include baile folklórico and mariachi demonstrations held annually at the Plaza del Pueblo de Los Angeles, near Olvera Street. Commercial interests in the United States have capitalized on the celebration, advertising Mexican products and services, with an emphasis on beverages, foods, and music.

Events tied to Cinco de Mayo also occur outside Mexico and the United States. For example, a sky-diving club near Vancouver, Canada holds a Cinco de Mayo skydiving event. In the Cayman Islands, in the Caribbean, there is an annual Cinco de Mayo air guitar competition.

Sessions start at 9:00am, 9:30am, 10:00am, 10:30am, and 11:00am. All sessions last one hour.

Who should know CPR? Everyone! About 80 percent of all sudden cardiac arrests that occur outside the hospital happen at home, but no one close by knows how to give CPR. Unfortunately, about 95 percent of those victims die before reaching the hospital, usually within minutes of collapsing.

If more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved!
