Kick-off Parade
Saturday, July 10, 10 a.m.
This year’s Festival theme of “Fun in the Sun!” promises many colorful and creative entries, with approximately 130 groups or organizations expected to participate. The Parade will be broadcast live on Indiana’s NewsCenter. The Parade route distance is approximately a two miles, winding through the West Central Neighborhood and downtown. The first Parade unit will step off at approximately 9:45 a.m., and arrive at the downtown broadcast point shortly after 10:00 a.m. The Parade typically finishes just before noon, ending at Calhoun and Superior Streets.

Waiter-Waitress Contest

The Waiter-Waitress Contest features 3-person teams from your favorite area restaurants, competing in a timed restaurant relay-style serving simulation/obstacle course, for prizes and bragging rights as the best waiter/waitress service team in Fort Wayne. The event is free to all spectators. Cheer on your favorite server as they race to be the fastest and most accurate! Prizes are awarded to the top three fastest serving teams.

Bed Race
Wednesday, July 14 at 6:30pm
The Bed Race delights spectators with fast, funny and uniquely created beds -- all on wheels -- as their 5-person teams parade down Main Street in front of the City-County Building, starting at 6:30. After the Bed Parade, each team (one bed rider and four teammates) will be pushing, pulling or sprinting to the finish line, for over $1,200 in prizes. The event is free for spectators. Competition categories include Ages 12 & under, and Adult; prizes are awarded in four categories for Best Decorated and Fastest Beds.
Childrens' Fest
Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17 from 10:00am - 4:00pm
For children age 12 and under. Hosted in a safe and spacious outdoor setting on the campus of IPFW, north of downtown Fort Wayne, Childrens’ Fest highlights include free amusement rides, a costumed character parade, live entertainment, hands-on activities, educational displays, games and prizes -- all with free admission and free parking! Attendance during 2009 was estimated at 10,000 visitors (children & parents).
Fireworks Finale
Saturday, July 17 at 10:00pm
The Three Rivers Festival Fireworks Finale is the largest fireworks display in Northeast Indiana! Bring a blanket down to Headwaters Park on Saturday, July 17 and enjoy the spectacular colors and big bangs that will close out this year's Festival. Fireworks set off from the top of One Summit Square.

13th Annual Young Adult Chess Tournament
Don't forget - the 13th Annual Young Adult Chess Tournament happens on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Main Library! The competition starts at 9:00 and lasts until 3:30pm.
The Chess Tournament will be open to young adults in grades 6-12.
Play chess, eat pizza and snacks, and have fun. Trophies will be awarded for winners in three age and skill levels, from beginner to advanced.
Players must register no later than Friday, July 30th, 2010 at 6:00 pm. Ask your librarian for a registration form or print one off here. Call Young Adults’ Services at 421-1255 for more information.

Happy Independence Day!
"Taxation without representation!" That was the battle cry of the 13 colonies in America that were forced to pay taxes to England's King George III with no representation in Parliament. As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell any signs of rebellion, and repeated attempts by the colonists to resolve the crisis without war proved fruitless.
On June 11, 1776, the colonies' Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia formed a committee with the express purpose of drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain. The final version was officially adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4.
One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks.
The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks.
Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday, but with full pay for federal employees. Today, communities across the nation mark this major midsummer holiday with parades, fireworks, picnics and the playing of the "Star Spangled Banner" and marches by John Philip Sousa.
The National Archives has a terrific digital display where you can view the Declaration of Independence, Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights.

Cake Fun
What's not to like about decorating your own cake? And gobs and gobs of frosting! Our children's librarian, Marra, managed to snag us a giant, 28-pound tub of frosting. Here we are posing with it:
It started out as one program for 12 teens, but the response was so great we decided to add another program earlier the same day. Here is the slideshow from 1:30, "taught" by Marra and Sarai:

Everyone had fun in both classes. We had so much fun we decided to do a special Saturday program again in the fall! The next one will also be a pre-registration event, so keep checking the blog and we'll get the date up as soon as possible!

Library Closed for July 4th Weekend
All Locations of the Allen County Public Library will be closed July 3, 4, & 5, 2010. We will reopen, Tuesday, July 6.

12th Annual Eggdrop Eggstravaganza
Do you love science? Do you love dropping eggs off of buildings? Is the sound "SPLAT!" music to your ears? If you answered "Yes!" to any of the above questions, then join Science Central at the 12th Annual Eggdrop Eggstravaganza!
Where: Science Central (1950 North Clinton Street)
When: Sunday, July 11th at 1:00pm (during the Three Rivers Festival!)
Each contestant must design and build a container that will hold one egg and prevent the egg from breaking when it is dropped off the top of a tall building. Science Central will supply the eggs and drop the container. Prizes will be awarded for the most successful drops as well as the most creative, most scientific, and most devastating crash!
The entry fee is two cans of food, which will be donated to Community Harvest Food Bank. Participants must register in advance.
